Captivate 13 Quiz – Failure Settings
November 8, 2025

I have a quiz that I’ve been working on for a couple of days. Users should be able to attempt the assessment up to 3 times.  At the 3rd time, they cannot retake it. I want the user to be directed to a Results Feedback slide that directs them on next steps.

The Continue button when they PASS works just fine; they are directed to a Success slice.

But the Continue button does not work at all on FAIL, even though in the Interactions properties, I indicated they should be moved to the Results Feedback slide. What can I do?

You might have the quiz set to Pass Required—The user must pass this quiz to continue — in Preferences > Quizzing > General. This setting conflicts with running out of tries and navigating to another slide using the continue button. Try changing the setting to Optional—The user can skip this quiz. Of course, the user has free will, but unless they answer all the questions correctly, they won’t get a passing score and will be directed to your Next Steps slide.

Hi Veronica Johnson,

Thank you for your query.

The Continue button will only work once the learner has exhausted all the attempts (3 in your case) and still fails, or when they pass the quiz. Just to confirm — does it work only on passing but not after all failed attempts? Also, please verify that the action is correctly set under the “On Fail” tab in the Quiz Results slide’s interaction properties.

Meanwhile, a new version of Captivate (v13) is available — you can install it via Help > Check for Updates or download it directly from this link, and check if it resolves the issue.

We hope this information addresses your query. You may also contact the technical support team directly via phone (+1-800-833-6687) or chat (https://www.adobe.com/getsupport) for assistance.
