Issues with Captivate Classic file import to Captivate 13.1
May 14, 2026

After finally downloading Adobe Captivate 13.1 to test the long-awaited “Import Classic Files” feature, the experience has been disappointing. While the feature technically allows Classic projects to open in the new version, the workflow limitations make it far less useful than I hoped.

Once a Classic file is imported and saved in Captivate 13.1, it becomes difficult to meaningfully rebuild or modernize the course. Key issues include:

  • Inability to copy images or text from imported legacy slides into new non-legacy slides
  • Loss of many advanced/customized interactions that made Captivate Classic powerful
  • Limited flexibility for updating or transitioning older projects

Instead of providing a bridge to the future, the feature currently feels more like a static archive of old content. This leaves me facing an uncomfortable choice:

  1. Continue maintaining legacy projects in Captivate Classic
    • Requires keeping older hardware and operating systems running
    • Means relying on software approaching end-of-life support in 2027
    • Continues dependency on an increasingly unstable legacy environment
  2. Rebuild courses from scratch in another platform such as Storyline
    • Time-consuming and expensive
    • Often the only practical option for long-term sustainability

For users who waited years for a migration pathway, this outcome feels especially frustrating.

Beyond import limitations, some projects successfully import but fail to publish entirely. Even after reducing projects down to a single slide with no interactions, publishing errors can persist. In some cases, logged issues remain tied to slides that were already deleted, suggesting deeper conversion problems within the imported project structure.

The biggest question now is whether Adobe plans to improve this feature:

  • Will imported slides become more “editable” and reusable (i.e., ability to copy content to non legacy slide)?
  • Will advanced Classic interactions eventually convert properly?
  • Will publishing stability improve?
  • Is this feature intended as a temporary viewer or a true migration tool?

Right now, the feature feels unfinished and difficult to rely on for real production workflows.
