After you create a Captivate eLearning project, the project needs to be published into a format that can be opened by your learner. Currently, the most common methods to publish a Captivate project is as a Flash SWF and HTML.

To view a project as SWF output, you will require any modern browser and the latest update of Adobe Flash Player.

Projects published as HTML5 play on any computer or mobile device that supports HTML5. This includes both Android and iOS-based devices.

Learners with devices that do not support Flash, such as, iPad or iPhone, are unable to view SWF content.

With SWF output, you can export the course to a PDF format. This is useful when you want to share content via emails or other means, and the learner’s browser does not have support for running Flash-based content.

You can also resize an SWF output according to the dimensions of a browser.

This is an old post, but at this moment I would recommend to everyone to publish to HTML only. One exception: if you are sure that the client will continue to use only old versions of browsers, you can publish to SWF. End of life of the Flash player plugin for recent webbrowsers will be there very quickly.

I never did publish to SWF anymore since about 2 years.
