I always thought it would be nice to have more control of the Smartshapes we make in Captivate and after a bit of exploration with the different options, I found exactly what I needed.

From this tool/option, you’ll now be able to add some fine tuning and dramatically change Smartshapes.

Step 1 – Create A Smartshape.

Click on the Shapes menu in the top ‘ribbon’ in Adobe Captivate and select a Smartshape you’d like to create.

Adobe Captivate's Shapes drop down menu

This  will now place a shape into the development area/stage.

Step 2 – Doing the Conversion.

To convert your new shape simply select it, then right click and look for ‘Convert to freeform’.

After you have selected the above menu, you will see a number of black edit points appear around the shape. This is where you can change the appearance of the shape.

Step 4 – Making the Edits.

Now you can change the positions of the black points by selecting one and dragging it to the desired location.

You can also add curved lines to the shape. This is done by clicking on a black edit point. After that you will see two green lines and red squares at the end of them. Drag the red squares to the desired direction and curves are added.

Bonus point.

Something I learnt at the last minute.

If you click away from the shape and want to change the shape again. All you have to do is select the shape, right click and select ‘Edit Points’.

I hope you found this useful and that it adds another skills into your elearning development toolbox.
