Recently I was tasked with creating a course for a client in Elucidat because they purchased the tool to help create their eLearning that was very mobile response. Although the tool seems to have promise and might eventually be competitive with Captivate like StoryLine or Rise, however it lacks a lot of features and usability compared to Captivate. The tools concept combines breakpoints along with fluid design which is an awesome concept and idea but the program has some shortfalls described below.
Elucidat states the following below:
Powerful Interactions
Engage your audience using powerful interactions such as social polling, gamification and branching. Hook your learners in and keep them coming back for more with personalized microlearning.
Brand and Style
Control and update styles and branding of multiple courses, all from one dashboard.
Customizable Layouts
Bring amazing, responsive designs to life using Elucidat’s WYSIWYG interface and Layout Designer.
However, I found the so called ” Powerful Interactions” to be very limiting and the built in templates were not very customizable, however everything worked great on mobile because it limits what you can do so that it will guarantee to work on most devices and look decent. So in my opinion you are trading customization, options, and what you can do for ease of use and assurance on mobile devices. It is also a cloud based program and seemed to be buggy and when I would work with the program I noticed sometimes extremely long delays between actions. They use a WYSIWYG (What You See Is What You Get) interface similar to to a WIX or Weebly and it is similar to using those programs compared to Adobe Dreamweaver which is more robust.
To summarize, although Captivate 2017 fluid boxes has some limitations and not as intuitive or works as well as we would all like, it is still hands down the best program I have seen for making eLearning courses for Mobile devices. Not to mention you can still use the breakpoint features although the build time is great but at least you have more the control and features. Hopefully Captivate does look into the programs features because the concept of breakpoints along with fluid design is an awesome concept and idea but developers might have to make sacrifices so the mobile integration is better like they did when Flash went away.
