Shared actions: requiring two clicks to trigger and appears to have lost previously working functions.
Hi everyone! First time poster here. I’m creating a curriculum for a client that wanted it created with Captivate. It’s a fish ID course, so each slide is a fish image. There’s a question mark at the bottom that, when clicked, opens the fish name. I made it a shared action so that when the user advances to the next slide, it is supposed to disappear.
It worked fine for one export, but now the actions apparently no longer work. Additionally, it requires two clicks to trigger the pop-up. I got these buttons working over two months ago at this point, and since it was my first time working with advanced actions, I can’t remember for the life of me what I did. In the one screenshot of the Advanced Actions box, you’ll see that one setting is left blank. I don’t remember why that’s like that but it’s the same in the archived version of the project where the actions work correctly.
If anyone can advise, I’m happy to share a link to the project. It’s a massive file; every slide is an image so it’s 776.2 MB (even when saved as 150 dpi at 1280 x 720). I’ve included some screenshots that might be relevant. Looking forward to some answers!
I have answered but since I inserted some links (have a feeling that you don’t understand the timeline very well), you will have to wait for the moderation of the answer. You could look at all the timeline blogs I posted here in the portal and on my personal blog. Reason for my suspicion is that timeline screenshot: since there is no audio clip, why have such a long timeline? Makes no sense especially since you have multiple interactive objects on that timeline. At least one of them could have paused the timeline. As for that action: insert the variable in a text container for debugging: it probably has the wrong value to start with since you need two clicks.
Hi Lieve,
You’re right; I found out I had some significant misconceptions regarding the timeline! When trying to figure out how to stop my slide from automatically advancing a while back, I found a pretty bizarre workaround that recommended I set it to be 600 seconds. I’ve since altered my timeline to be, as I understand it, appropriately configured (see attached)!
Now I’ve been investigating the variable issue and what I’ve found is this:
For context, I have two things happening: 1, I’ve executed a shared action to allow the q mark in the bottom right to act as a toggle. The client wants the name ID to disappear if the user navigates back to the slide, even if they haven’t toggled it off, so I set the slide to hide the Name-ID on enter.
SO, when I set up a 5-slide preview, the Name-ID is hidden and the variable reads at 1. When I select the question mark to execute the shared action that is revealing the Name-ID, the variable reads at 0. If I advance to the next slide, the variable still shows as 0, even though the next slide’s Name-ID is still hidden. This is when I need to double-click; the first click on the q mark sets the variable to 1 again. The second click sets it to 0 and the Name-ID appears. Any other thoughts?
Why is that timeline so looooooong? I don’t see an audio clip, which is the only reason why you should have to extend a timeline to such a length. Maybe have a look at my many articles and interactive movies concerning the timeline. Here are some links:

It looks like you are not aware of the Preview button in the advanced actions dialog box, makes it much easier to ‘read’ a conditional action. If you have to click twice to have a result, it probably means a logical bug. Which event is triggering that action? Do you use the On Enter event to reset the action?
