Global Settings – Fatal error
As I was reviewing my Global Settings I got an error. Now when I click on Edit/Preferences/Default on the Create New Style Button I get a Fatal Error. I lost all my defaults.

What can I do to restore the default settings
Solution 1
First open a Captivate project or capture new one
Go To Panel “Themes/AnyTheme” for Example “Themes/Cement and Steel”
if you get any error ignore it..
Close application and reopen
Go to Menu / Edit/ Preferences/Recording/Defaults
now you will see everything is fine..

You can clean cache files, bak files, temp files..

Thank you for getting back to me and sorry for the confusing question.
I am not using themes. My OS is Windows 7. I simply wanted to set the Global Preferences/Recording Defaults to adjust format for Caption Text, Highlight Box and Hint/Fail shapes so that when I record software simulations (Demo or Training) Captivate automatically uses my formats which saves me time. Here are the steps I did:
1 – I had Captivate opened but no files opened
2 – Clicked on Edit/Preferences
3 – Under Category I selected Defaults
4 – In the Default Fields I clicked on the blue hyperlink: Default Caption Style
5 – Adjusted format for Text Caption and Highlight Boxes
6 – Clicked on Apply and did get an error message (that was not normal)
7 – I clicked on Apply again, Captivate took the changes so I clicked on OK
8 – Did a recording test, my format for the Text Caption was applied correctly
Then I wanted to add more Global Recording Default for the Hint/Fail shapes so I revisited the Global Preferences for adjusting the recording defaults:
1 – I had Captivate open but no files opened
2 – Clicked on Edit/Preferences
3 – Under Category I selected Defaults
4 – In the Default Fields the blue hyperlink: Default Caption Style was no longer displayed
7 – Under Category: Recording/Defaults I cliked on the button Create New Syles
8 – And this is where I got and still get the fatal error
I can work around this by using project preferences but I would prefer to set my recording defaults for any projects.
I will ask IT to run the CleanPreferences maybe it will reset the Golbal Preferences for recording.

Are you very new to Captivate? You seem to ignore that every project in Captivate is based on a theme, you ALWAYS use a theme. The Recording defaults are part of the theme, not of the Preferences. You have also the choice between Captions and Shapes for the messages. By default for sims it is set to Captions, not Shapes. Did you check that out?
A theme consists of: theme color palettes, object styles, master slides (including the Blank master slide needed for software sims, but also all the Quizzing master slides), skin and Recording Defaults.
It is still very probable that your problem is linked with a corrupt theme, not only to eventually corrupt Preferences.
Question is a bit confusing. You talk about Preferences, which can be cleared and reset, but also about object styles which are part of the Theme.
To reset all Prefrences (you could lose customisation) you need admin rights. Find the folder ‘utils’ under the installation folder and run the CleanPreferences… file appropriate for your OS (it is a good idea to mention OS and version number of CP in a question). You need to have Captivate closed when doing this.
If the Themes included with CP have to be reset to the original ones, I need to know the OS, because can help only for Windows. Themes are in a folder Layouts. The original folder is under the installation folder of Captivate, but the duplicate folder which is used by you when working in Captivate is in your profile. You could safely delete that folder, and when you restart CP, a new fresh and clean duplicate will be created in your profile.
