I’m in the process of saving a Captivate 2019 file. The following error comes up:
Has anyone seen this error?
Thank you!
Indeed, Clear Preferences resets defaults. You can save some custom items, see:

If we can believe the message, this is indeed linked with the cache saving. Do you have a backup? You cleared the cache? You are sure not to be on a roaming profile?
Yes, I do have a backup and as I mentioned I have been seeing the error for a few weeks now on several (all) projects – though I haven’t experienced any other issues such as corruption. I am not sure what you mean by roaming profile. My cache folders are always saved on my local drive. However, many of the project or template files are saved on a university network drive. The project file associated with the error message I reported here, is local. When you say “roaming profile” are you talking about the machine profile, or a Captivate profile?
Roaming profile is for the network seting
You should never work on a Captivate project while it is on a network, that i asking for trouble. Do no use cptl-files, cause problems.
My team has been using templates since CP 5.5 and never really experienced or noticed any issues until this latest update. The template (.cptl) does seem to be the culprit causing the error message. I started with a blank project and the problem no longer occurs. Also, we recently started using Advanced and Share Actions and didn’t realize the template was causing issues there as well as Rod Ward explains in his video on template duplication. As an aside and our team best practice, we do our project work locally but save the finished .cptx to our network drive, not the other way around. Thanks Lieve. I really appreciate your advise 🙂
I’m consistently seeing a similar message with every project I save, even after following both of Lieve’s suggestions. If I hit Retry, then it saves though I notice that the file the message is complaining about is always the same and never does get created. The cached folder does exist and the project does not appear to be corrupted. This just started happening a couple of weeks ago after I updated CP 2019. Now running 11.0.1.266 on Win 7 E. My colleagues, running the same version on Win 10 do not seem to have the issue. I also noticed that the error message always references the same .cpd file no matter which project cache folder it is trying to save to. WARNING to others – after running CleanPreferences Captivate starts with a clean slate which means that the defaults startup and all your recent projects will disappear from that dialog box. They do still exist wherever you last saved them. You’ll just have to find and reopen them if you want them to appear as recent.
Never did see that error message, it is talking about the Cache folder. Can you check the paths under Preferences, General Settings: are both paths pointing to folders on your system, not to an external or networked drive? Is your profile a roaming profile? You could try to clear the cache with no project open, using Preferences and the button Clear cache. If that is not helping try to Clean the Preferences. For that purpose, close Captivate and run the CleanPreferences…. file appropriate for your OS from the subfolder ‘utils’ under the installation folder. You need admin rights.BTW check your version number under Help, About Captivate. Recent version is 11.0.1.266.
Thank you for responding. I couldn’t get the error off the screen. I changing the path under system preferences for Captivate didn’t work. I ended up uninstalling/reinstalling Captivate. Although the file was still there it was corrupted and I was unable to open it. So I have to redo my project from the beginning.
Don’t ,forget to turn on Backup in Preferences!
Thank you for reminding me!
