Issues with Shared Action

Hi Community,

I’m hoping that I can get help with an issue that I’m experiencing.  I’ve tried to resolve on my own, but I’m at a lost.

I have a Game board and question slides that performs as follows:

  1. On success of answering the question correctly…
    1. Executes conditional action that checks if variable C100-BTN is zero.  I initialize it with 0 when creating the variable.
    2. PERFORM….
      1. Assigns 1 to variable C100-BTN – indicating that the question was attempted.
      2. Returns the learner back to the game board using Jump to action
      3. Disables the C100-BTN category question preventing the learner from navigating to the questions a second time.

Using a separate Shared Action

  1. On failure – when the question is answered incorrectly.
    1. Returns the learner back to the game board
    2. Disables the category question button that was pressed to the answered question

Yes, basically the same action, but setup as two different shared actions.

I repeatedly get the error: “The share action specified for Action After Last Attempt is invalid.  Your changes cannot be saved.

See screenshot below.  Greatly appreciate any help you provide.

Tiffany, I am bit worried because you remained silent for several days. Were you able to fix the problem?

Hi Lieve,

Thanks for checking on me. Although I was able to correct the shared action, the error persists. I am not able to publish the project.

To isolate the issue, I disabled all questions slides. I previewed the project and everything worked. I enabled the first 5 question slides, and again, it worked when previewing. I decided to repeat this process one slide and at time. In doing so, I learned that the error appears on all slides past slide 12.
Now, this shouldn’t happen because slides 12 – 25 are mere copies of the previous question slide. I even created a new slide thinking that maybe there’s an invisible object causing the issue. I got the same error and the project will not publish. If I disable them, leaving question slide 1-12 visible, it works. I can successfully preview and publish. Very Strange!

In frustration, I reached out to Adobe’s product engineers. They requested my project file via email. An engineer later contacted me and confirmed that there was nothing wrong with what I was doing – he also was not able to recreate the issue on his end. During our call, I learned that he tested my project file on a Windows machine, so we ended the call to allow time for additional testing on a MAC machine running Mac OS Catalina.

Thanks for reaching out – I’ll keep you posted.

Did you copy/paste the question slides? Not sure to have understood that. Do they have shared actions? I learned and also told many users never to copy/paste questions slides themselves, nor copy items to which shared actions are attached.

Exit action for On Enter of a quiz slide? Why?

I already mentioned hat first parameter which has no description, and you choose a system variable for it in the video? I need to see the Advanced action which is at the base of the shared action, don’t understand anything from the description of the parameters. The problems are for sure linked with them.

I don’t know where you are seeing this because I don’t have an Exit action for “On Enter” of any of my quiz slides.  The actions are on the Quiz Answer selections themselves.

Also, No, I was not selecting the system variable – that was only to show you what was appearing.  When I clicked into the box, it selecting the first variable, which is why I cancelled out of it.  I know better.

FYI – the initial screenshot is a jpeg.  If you zoom in, you can clearly see the screenshots of all the items you are asking to see.  I’ll try to attach them individually.

See attached see shot of the Advance Action – I’m sending two.  The forum won’t allow me to attach more than 1 file.

I did see the Exit in that video.  First time you show a Quiz slide.

Did you define that variable in the Correct action as a parameter? It has no description in the Parameter dialog box. And in the video I did see that you choose a system variable instead of the Boolean user variable which you define, one per question I believe. The incorrect shared action has two parameters (Button and Slide), the correct has the variable as third parameter. Due to the error you got, I suppose one of the parameters is wrongly defined. The system variable which I saw in the video cannot get another value, it is read only since it didn’t belong to the Movie Control category.

Please use the Preview to show an action, easier to grab its significance since all decisions and the ELSE part are included. Preview is launched using the first button (arrow) in the top right control bar of the Advanced Actions dialog box.

Hi Lieve,

My apologies, I use my trackpad a lot, and in using it, I must have scrolled and inadvertently selected the action you see in the video.  The others have a no action defined.  That was a fat-finger.  Thanks for catching it.

I will try redoing in actions and parameters.  I’ll keep you posted on my progress.

Thanks,

Sorry that it takes so long to solve the problem, Tiffany. It would be easier if I had a look at the file, but consider that to be a consultancy job. Answering in the social media is not getting any bread on my plate.

I completely understand.  I’m looking at things again.  I’m sure I’m overlooking something.  Thanks for your help.

Lieve,

I know – 😂 – my goals can be a bit unrealistic at times.  Sorry for the tiny screenshots.  I was hoping you could zoom in.  I recorded a quick video.

Here’s the link.

Hi Lieve,

As always, I appreciate your help.  Yes, I’ve read several on your Shared Actions articles and noticed the reference – “Empress of Shared Actions.”   I love it!  You have a wealth of knowledge, and I’m impressed with your willingness to share and help others grow.  It’s commendable. I’ve learned a ton from you already!  I try to set actionable goals for myself, and have myself a month to master advance and shared actions.  Hmm – I probably shouldn’t have done that – lol.

Anyway, attached is a screenshot of the actions and variable – showing how I am using them in the project.

Thanks again!

Sorry, Tiffany, I cannot read the tiny screenshots… Just did see there is an empty line in one of the parameter dialog boxes. Quiz slides have no Failure action, only a Last Attempt action. If you have only one attempt, you could call it a Failure action.

One month? Finding out personal rules for shared actions has taken me several months, and I had already years of experience with advanced actions.

Oh – I forgot to mention that I do have the quiz slides set as – 1 attempt.

See screenshot.

Can I see the actions themselves, both the Correct and the Incorrect one. You will need to use it as a template, fill in the parameters as an example. I also like to see the definition of the parameters. Did you fill them in correctly when applying a shared action. At first sight you cannot have issues with literals defined as parameters (those are tricky). I need to know if you use a variable as parameter.

BTW, the most recent nickname I got from users was ‘Empress of Shared Actions’…
