Question: Applying effects to object.

Hello,

I have created a group of objects which act as a drop down menu. This menu is set to “display for: rest of project” and is hidden on a slide which can’t be accessed by users. I have a button on all slides which shows the drop down menu and then hides it again. Users can access the drop down menu at all times. The menu acts like a table of contents menu and they can jump to different pages as they wish. This works perfectly for it’s intended purpose.

However, my question is:
How can I apply an effect/animation to this drop down menu to show that it is actually moving down? (Just like a drop down menu would.) The animation needs to play at any point it is triggered.
Is it possible to apply an effect to an object once it is shown? I have tried to add a custom effect via “apply effect” in advanced actions but this did not work. I can also see there is an option for “trigger animation” in object properties, but there are only options when I have a button call for the effect rather than when I have the “apply effect” in an advanced action. I sense it could be some issue with timing but I can’t seem to find a work around.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Thank you for your time.
NJC

If you can work it out, don’t bother about searching for the reason why it didn’t work from the master slide. Hope you can figure it out with that blog post and custom paths. You can combine the paths with a fade in/out effect in a custom effect if you want to.

I do not think that is the origin at all. I have used shape buttons on master slides to do more complicated actions then just applying an effect on a object which has an ID, which means that object has to be on a normal slide or timed for the rest of the project (as is the case for the button in that example file to which I posted a link).

For such an in/out solution you should NEVER use an Entrance or Exit effect which are using defined motion paths but create custom motion paths. I am using guides to make sure that the in/out motion paths are perfectly mirrored. Have a look at this blog:

I just hope you’ll not claim like someone else today that I am too agressively pointing to blog posts. Not the first insult in 2020. Those blog posts are written and have taken sometimes many hours of work, just to provide more detailed explanations of workflows. I am not earning a dime from them.

Do you want something like the bookmark menu I created in this Interactive movie?

Custom Play/pause button

I know that it is always visible in this movie, but that is a small edit.

Thank you for your reply.

I have actually figured it out. The effect wasn’t working because the button calling for the animation was a part of my master slides. I took the button from master slides and added into a slide which displays for rest of project. Now it all works fine.

I feel that the functionality of buttons within master slides is very limited.

I do still have issues with some of the effects. I have used “EaseInBottom”(Entrance Effect) for the menu to drop down and this looks great and works every time. But when I try to add “EaseOutTop” when the menu disappears, I get some issues. The next time I open the menu, it only moves half way through the animation before pausing. I can’t find a conflicting pause anywhere and the Ease In and Ease Out should travel the same distance.

I think if your blog link provides solutions to questions, then I can’t see a problem with that. At least you have taken the time to read, consider and reply.

Anyway, I will try to use custom motions path instead and see if that works. As for the buttons in the master slide I don’t know why it wouldn’t work. It is exactly the same button as the one I have put into the slides. It uses the same AA. I am a good way through the project now so there could be something conflicting with the master slides that I cannot find.
