A Fix to Photoshop’s 3D Rendering

For years I’ve been using some of the 3D features in Photoshop and have made some stunning images using this feature. I ran into an issue with Photoshop 2020 (version 21+). Below is a sample of what happens when you make a 3D sphere.

All the 3D content is dark or black. There is a lighting issue.

I was very fortunate to get in touch with one of the engineers from Adobe. He gave me this instruction.

  1. try this workaround From the 3D Panel select the SCENE.
  2. Properties Panel > check Backfaces.

This works. It’s not turned on by default. If you do turn on lighting the backfaces, it will light up the 3D object they way it should.

Please let me know if you find any other issues.

Bit outdated… we have already a new version of Photoshop.

What a confusing workflow.  Have been working with Photoshop since over two decades and see more and more non-intuitive workflows appearing. Have used this 3D feature a lot (look at my logo)…

Anyway, thanks for the fix, Phil.
