Editing a shared action

Hi,

I’ve noticed that I need to edit a shared action. In my case I just want to delay an action. Other than that everything is supposed to remain the same within the shared action.

Is there any way I can edit the shard action without having to creating a new  one an then subsequently having to add all the parameters all over again.

To report bugs/feature requests, click your profile avatar, you’ll see the Form listed there.

You seem to ignore filtering in dropdown lists? Type a sequence of characters and the list will be restricted to the elements with that sequence.

Thanks for the advice. I will get to it. Unfortunate the filtering seems to be disabled, but might just be me. Thanks again for always responding so quickly.

If you talk about the dropdown list in the Parameters dialog box, you need to click twice. That is not the case for all other lists where filtering is functional, like the ones in the Advanced Actions dialog box.

I would NEVER copy/paste an element with a shared action attached to it myself. Is that your usual workflow? Copy/paste works with advanced actions, as long as all the elements referred to are in place. For shared actions, my workflow is to open the first project as External Library. Either you can apply the action from that library or you can drag it immediately to the Project library. That feels a logical workflow to me, but may be wrong of course. I have a dedicated project which has only shared actions.

Even when doing copy/paste for advanced actions you may encounter issues, would never do them for actions triggered by slide events. It is one of the main reasons why I will often prefer shared actions.

Will not try explain why you cannot edit a shared action, it is a limitation. That is why I always recommend in classes about advanced/shared actions to test the workflow extensively as advanced action before converting to a shared action.

Recommended workflow is, if you don’t mind another name for the action:

  • Use the shared action as a template for an advanced action
  • Edit the advanced action (preferably test it also)
  • Create a new shared action from the advanced action

You will have to re-assign the shared action to the events it was already assigned to. Use the Library Usage functionality, makes it much easier than for advanced action.

Thanks for the walk through. Is there a chance that there is a bug within cpativate? I went through the steps you explained (it is usually my standard workflow) and everything worked fine. When I then copied some slides over to a different project the shared action appeared to discard one element from the shared action (a delay next action by xy seconds). Hence,  grudgingly I created a new shared action and again it disregarded the “delay by”-element, when copying the slide over to a different project. On a different note: I have come across plenty of things that are not really user-friendly in captivate. Is there any place I can report bugs and issues? (e.g. why is there only a scroll-down menu when editing parameters in shared actions and not a type-in option?…)
