What do designers need to do for course content that run in LMS by using Adobe Flash plug-in when it expires later this fall?

This topic is very important. As Flash will not be supported in browsers after December 2020, I’ll need to convert lessons to HTML5 delivery only. I liked at the presentation that Lieve posted above, but it doesn’t seem to show how to solve the issues, just identify them.

I ran across this article describing the conversion/rehost process. Still doesn’t ‘magically convert SWF’, but it is something to work with.

Sure would be useful if a Captivate 2020 (or 2021) would address an easy conversion option.

There will not be an easy, magical conversion, I am pretty sure about that. I have tried to warn in my articles since 3 years that this conversion would take a lot of time.

Indeed, my blog was meant as an intro to the presentation. My topic for the conference has changed very lately (did Deep dive Advanced/Shared actions), and the conversion topic was presented by A. Partridge. I didn’t publish the rest of my explorations, the ‘how-to’. Especially for older courses my recommendation is to start from scratch, instead of trying to edit the existing course. If it is a cptx-file, you can always use the project Library as external Library in your new project.  That will save you some time. It will probably be quicker than editing the course and find the incompatible items.

If the older course is in cp format, you have to recreate from scratch, no choice.

That may already be a problem at this moment. If the learners use a Browser without the Flash Player plugin, they are not able to see your courses. Flash player will never expire, its support will be discontinued and most browsers (except old IE) already do not install it by default.

This EOL of Flash player plugins for desktop browsers was announced more than 3 years ago. The Captivate team has provided and improved the output to HTML5 already before that announcement.

This will not be fixed automatically for you, because both output formats are completely different. You can ask your learners to stay with older browser versions or you have to republish the courses to HTML5. Whether that is an easy or a cumbersome task depends on many factors. You can watch this Captivate tutorial:

SWF to HTML

It will show you possible scenarios.

Allen Partridge presented at the EL World conference about this topic. The presentation is still available under the button ‘EL World’.
