Has anyone ever seen this icon on a screen and what does it mean and how can it be removed?

You’re welcome. At least it helps you, because the original user never came back to read the answer.
That is the expand icon, which appears when there is not enough space in the text container (caption or shape) to show all the text you have inserted in the container. It is typical for a Fluid Boxes responsive project.
There are several possibilities to get rid of it: less text, check that you didn’t insert unnecessary line breaks or trailing spaces, change the font…
As for the font size: you can reduce the maximum font size which is the one you define in the original resolution (desktop in most cases). Do not forget to reduce also the minimum font size!. You find it under the Properties of the slide in a Fluid Boxes project. It is set by default to a (IMO too big) font size of 14pts, can be reduced to 10 or maybe even lower (for use on the small browser resolutions of a phone). The icon may appear only on smaller resolutions.
