Captivate audio problems Software Sim

Hello,
I am a new user of the latest version of Captivate and I’d like to use it to record software demos.

The problem I have is that every time I record an audio file (I record the script in one take) it only inserts (part of the) the audio for one single step (or slide) of the demo. I could record an audio for each slide but that would make the voice over very inconsistent and it would also make it more difficult for me to edit the software demo itself as I’m orienting myself on the script.

Is it possible to record an Audio in software simulation mode once and then lay it over all of the slides?

It is possible to record project audio. Look under the audio menu; Record to Slides.

If you record them in Audition, by using Edit Project audio, you could even move the slide markers to correct the placement.

HOWEVER, for the present HTML output I would never recommend this at all. Reason is that each audio clip needs to be loaded On Enter for the slide where it is needed. If you keep one long project audio, the audio needs to be loaded fully On Enter of the first slide, which can not only lead to long loading times, but also creates other issues: you probably will end up with loss of synchronisation between the graphical and the audio part.

For that reason good practice means that you use one audio clip per slide, and – in case of slide audio – to leave a small gap before and after the audio timeline as is visible in the attached screenshot.

Know that you can cut project audio in clips with any audio editor. I use Audition because I have a CC account, but the free Audacity is another possibility. Label those clips consistently, and import them to the Project Library. From that Library you can drag each clip to the proper slide.

One of the reasons it is only capturing some of your audio is if you are speaking during clicks. You have to give it about 1 – 1.5 seconds of silence before and after clicks to not have audio interrupted.

Another thing that I found is that I have to wait approximately 2 seconds after the countdown to begin speaking, otherwise my audio is cut off at the start.

This video helped me when doing software simulation audio recordings. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vlutGtB3BEE
