Howdy y’all! Posting to check if anyone could recommend a free screen-capturing tool for making User Guides. Many come with watermarks if free. Just thinking if paid ones are the only option. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Of course I mostly create tutorials using Captivate or sometimes Snagit, both non free.
However for quick screenshots I often use the Snipping tool, combined with Paint 3D for editing, which are shipping both for free in Windows. Did you check them out? I can imagine a User guide created with a text editor or a desktop publishing application using those screenshots. That was the way I created my courses for software apps before I discovered Captivate two decades ago. They will not be interactive of course.
If you want to capture a video, I just read this recent article, maybe it can help you too?
