Moodle has a free start version of a LMS. And there are many others around. I just asked it on ChatGPT and this is the answer:

“Yes, there are several other free Learning Management Systems (LMS) available besides Moodle. Here are some popular alternatives:

  1. Canvas LMS: Canvas is an open-source LMS that is widely used in educational institutions. It offers a user-friendly interface, a range of features for course management, and supports customization through plugins and integrations.
  2. Chamilo: Chamilo is an open-source LMS designed for e-learning and collaboration. It’s known for its user-friendliness and multilingual support. It’s often used in academic and corporate settings.
  3. Sakai: Sakai is a community-driven, open-source LMS used in higher education. It provides tools for course management, collaboration, and assessment.
  4. Claroline: Claroline is an open-source e-learning platform that emphasizes collaboration and communication. It offers features for creating and managing courses, as well as tracking student progress.
  5. ILIAS: ILIAS is a popular open-source LMS primarily used in Europe. It offers a wide range of features for online learning, including assessment tools, communication features, and course management.
  6. ATutor: ATutor is an open-source LMS designed with accessibility in mind. It’s suitable for creating accessible e-learning content and offers features like content authoring and assessment.
  7. Forma LMS: Forma LMS is an open-source platform that focuses on flexibility and scalability. It supports course creation, management, and tracking, making it suitable for both small and large organizations.
  8. Docebo: While Docebo does offer a paid version, there’s also a free plan available. It’s a cloud-based LMS known for its user-friendly interface and features like social learning and reporting.
  9. Edmodo: Edmodo is a free LMS designed for K-12 education. It includes features for communication, collaboration, and assessment, making it suitable for teachers and students.
  10. Google Classroom: Google Classroom is a free LMS designed for educators. It integrates with Google Workspace (formerly G Suite) and offers features for creating and managing classes, assignments, and assessments.

Remember that the availability and features of these LMS platforms may change over time, so it’s a good idea to check their official websites or community forums for the most up-to-date information and to evaluate which one best meets your specific needs.”

You didn’t specify which type of training you want to log, nor which data you want to collect? How many trainees do you need to follow up? I would definitely go for one of the free LMSs, was even amazed that Claroline is still around. I used it in the university college almost 30 years ago before we got Blackboard.

Agree Johanna_S, its no doubt exciting. However, after a certain amount of usage the fine print pops up. Barring google sheets most free applications have a limitation. Check it out and let us know here. Will benefit one and all!

Really? Most of the free LMSs need a little bit more work, but they work perfectly. I hope also to have convinced you how useful ChatGPT can be to give you pretty complete information within seconds. Besides all the doom scenarios about AI,  it can save you a lot of time and you always need to stay critical. Personally I prefer Bingchat because it gives you links to the used resources. Imagine my amazement when I see my blog posts popping up a lot when questions about advanced Captivate are asked.

Hi Audrey, some of the things from the top of my head are –

  1. Create a Training Matrix: A training matrix document or spreadsheet that lists all your employees and the training programs they need. Include columns for employee names, training courses, completion dates, and any other relevant information.

2. While i did hear you say that you are fed up of excel –  it’s still a cost-effective option. You can create a well-structured spreadsheet in Excel or use Google Sheets, which allows for easier collaboration and access from anywhere with an internet connection.

3. You can store your training matrix in a shared folder or document management system, such as Google Drive or Dropbox. This way, multiple team members can access and update the training completions.

4. Sign-in sheets; regular audits by the L&D personnel or a designated team member responsible for training.

But wouldn’t this be the same as just a standard excel Sheet?   Seems like the only new part is placing this in a shared location?  Am I missing something?

Thank you so much 😉

It is similar but not same. Its online and great for collaboration. We used it in the past to track projects across functions and it proved to be very effective. There are tons of resources on how to optimally use Google sheets on YouTube, Twitter etc. I keep seeing ads that say, we dont even use 25% of Google sheets’ capabilities.
