Hi all! I am currently designing a program on Cyber Risk Management for my organization. In this program, I have to create awareness and drive home a few main points. Rather than present information screen after screen, no matter how visual or interactive, I decided to add the element of storytelling to make the program more interesting for the learners. I want to know from you all experienced IDs here how to balance storytelling with instructional objectives. How to integrate the story and instructional content seamlessly and avoid any potential distractions or dilution to the core message?
Here’s something. Create a fictional case study that reflects real-life situations, presenting instructional content as the solution or craft a story that mirrors the organization’s cyber risks, featuring characters who overcome challenges with instructional content.
Hi! One approach to avoid distractions is to use a ‘guided journey’ structure. Create a relatable protagonist who encounters different cyber risk scenarios throughout the program. At key points, pause the story and provide relevant instructional content to address the specific challenges. By structuring the program as a guided journey, you maintain learner interest while reinforcing the main points effectively.
In my experience, I’ve found that one way to balance storytelling with instructional objectives is to use relevant case studies. By presenting real-life scenarios and their outcomes, learners can grasp the importance of the core message while being engaged in the narrative. This approach has been effective in my previous programs.
