Questions about the new version of Captivate

Our team has been using Articulate 3 but it’s at it’s end of life. So I’ve been looking at Captivate.

I have used the old version and didn’t like it, but it looks like the new version has had things taken out?

What has been taken out? How in-depth is it? It looks all very surface level to me.

Can you include things like variables and triggers like Articulate?

Could I setup a template with company colours, fonts etc so it works with all the inbuilt widgets?

To be honest I come from an animation background and I’ve done a bit of game design and I’m baffled by how out of date the whole elearning software sector is. The team from Captivate seems like they’re from a completely different company compared to other Adobe products.

Due to your background, I would not recommend to start with the New version 12 in its present state. Maybe when they include all the features available in the older version.

Reason: at this moment the new version produces only responsive projects using a block structure with precanned design options. It is possible to create a branded theme but themes lost a great deal of their features. There is a color palette, fonts choice but styles are mostly limited to text styles, not object styles. You no longer can have master slides and objects timed for the rest of the projects, mostly due to the many limitations in a responsive project.

Yes, you can have variables and event triggers. But Captivate had them long before Articulate ever released their product.  Former versions have a point-and-click programming environment which are converted to JS on runtime. They were called ‘advanced actions’ and in a reusable version ‘Shared actions’. Each project has a Project library and it can be used as ex&&ternal library including not only much used assets but also the Shared actions. That all has been thrown away in the New version. My clients will not switch for that reason, I have created themes, libraries and Shared actions which they sometimes use since years. Roundtripping with Photoshop, Audition, Illustrator, Animate…. and other Adobe applications have been ‘forgotten’ in the new version.

Sorry for this long answer, but you would need some patience to have this in the New version. I still cope with the maybe outdated UI in version 11.5.5.553, because it is the most stable version since two decades and has all the features I love.
