Hello everyone. I need to create a course for our internal staff teaching them how to use the new software. I am a bit lost on that as I haven’t developed courses on software in the past and I need to create this one as a priority. How do we go about creating such courses? Any help is highly appreciated.

Firstly, you may want to check what kind of software it is and how this type of training has been imparted previously in your organization. A few options to consider are-
- Use a screen recording tool to record a video having a step-by-step walkthrough with narration
- Record a simulation with a tool like the new Adobe Captivate. It will let you create 3 modules simultaneously, namely Demo (show-me), Training (let me try), and Assessment (test me). In Training and Assessment modules, the learners will be able to try the steps on their own in a simulated environment.
- Create a step-by-step process flow in a Word doc with screenshots, something like a user guide
If the learners are expected to practice, then dummy/test logins for the users can also be given.
I strongly recommend to use Classic Captivate in this case. There are several reasons:
- The software sim in New Captivate is a copy of the old one, but it uses items and terms which no longer exists in this version. I think about click boxes, Text Entry boxes. That makes it rather limited.
- You can have 3 modes in sims: demo, assessment, training. Only the last two are really interactive and scored. The score can be transferred to a LMS. However due to the focus on responsive projects, automatic panning/zooming will occur on mobile devices. That is not what you’ll want for a real assessment since it points to the region which needs to be clicked.
- I never used Demo mode since Video Demo appeared in version 6. The quality of the output which is always MP4 is much better, it has a non-destructive editor with much more possibilities. Publish to MP4 is fine, and MP4s can be distributed in many ways. That feature is not available in New Captivate. Do not publish a software sim in Demo mode to MP4 because you’ll could be very frustrated if you have a lot of FMR slides which need to be converted to individual MP4s on runtime. I often need to warn for this workflow.µ
I once started writing blog about software sims, btu since almost no one was interested…
