I have been using 11.5 and now I am using 11.8 version (Classic version), can I import classic cptx files into latest version?

Hi mariannes80413347

Thank you for your question.

We also like to thank Paul Wilson for sharing the correct answer.

We would also like to add that your older projects (from Adobe Captivate Classic) are not compatible with the all-new Adobe Captivate. The two versions have been developed in two different technology stacks and even the file types are different. However, our team is committed to ensure that your current workflows are not disrupted. You will have access to both versions of the product with one license (at no additional cost). Therefore, you can work on your existing projects using Adobe Captivate Classic, and new projects using all-new Adobe Captivate.

Feel free to reply if you have any more questions.

Will there be a future update that will allow users to open cptx files in the new captivate?  Seems like Adobe is neglecting designers who have been loyal Captivate users and have a large library of captivate modules that they would like to update into the new software.

Part of the problem was that the code base for Adobe Captivate Classic relies on older technologies such as SWF. Adobe could not responsibly continue to use Classic as the basis of the new software. I’m happy they gave broken from the past. That said, my understanding is they are working on something that will make it easier to get your legacy content migrated from Classic project files, however no timelines have been committed to.

I would not encourage you at all to import 11.5.5.553 files in 11.8.2 – which is indeed possible – because you cannot go back to 11.5.5.553. I have several clients who did this, and some ended up with completely corrupt projects. As long as the project is very simple and linear you will probably not have issues. However if the project is more complicated and has advanced/shared actions with variables you could end up with similar corruptions. To be honest, 11.5.5 was a very stable version, whereas 11.8.2 removed features and also still has a lot of added bugs. Not all removed features were incompatible with HTML5 output, and even more were compatible with MP4 output but they are gone. If you want more details, you can contact me again.

Problem is that only 11.8.2 can exist on the same system as version 12 (new release), which means you need two systems if you want to keep 11.5.5.553 as well.

I wonder if I understood your question correctly, because ‘most recent version’ is version 12.3. The answer there would be negative: projects in 11.8.2 and 12.3 are completely INcompatible.

If you are on a monthly subscription to Adobe Captivate you can download the All-New Adobe Captivate and what is now called Adobe Captivate Classic from this page here:
https://www.adobe.com/ca/products/captivate/vipdownload.html

For Adobe Captivate Classic, you will presently get release 11.8.2, which is capable of loading projects from any release of Adobe Captivate Classic or 2019 release. Just remember that as soon as you press the save button, the project file will only be available to that latest version of Adobe Captivate Classic. You will be unable to open the file in prior releases.

Hi Paul I got the newest version of adobe captivate but on my computer I cannot open the old cptx files since my Finder only looks for the .cpt  files. have you got a hint for me to copy the old files? I am new to the program but the old files are still here from my workmate who was here 4 years ago… so the version the cptx files are made with are older than 4yrs… Thanks so much!

When I’m reinstalling both versions of Captivate on my PC, installing version 12 first (New) followed by version 11 (Classic) seems to get the association of file extensions the way you would expect it to work.

Hi mariannes80413347

Thank you for your question.

We also like to thank Paul Wilson for sharing the correct answer.

You will have access to both versions of the product with one license (at no additional cost). Therefore, you can work on your existing projects using Adobe Captivate Classic (.CPTX), and new projects using all-new Adobe Captivate (.CPT) files. You can use the following URL to install the both version of Captivate.
