Non-Responsive or Responsive When It Comes To Video
July 14, 2017
I've been an eLearning designer and developer since 2005. In 2015 I started my own eLearning design company. I began creating Adobe Captivate video tutorials to help promote my business through my YouTube channel at https://youtube.com/captivateteacher. My intention with my YouTube videos was to attract attention from organizations looking for a skilled Captivate developer. This strategy proved successful as I've worked with clients worldwide, helping them build highly engaging eLearning solutions. In addition, my YouTube channel presented another benefit of attracting aspiring Captivate developers to seek me out as a teacher. I now offer online and onsite training on Adobe Captivate, teaching users the skills to build engaging and interactive learning.

I’m about to build a custom theme and some sample slides for a client and I want it to be really flexible. I know they are going to be using lots of embedded videos. Here is the question. With video in mind, should I create a non-responsive or responsive theme?

Video on an iPhone 5s was pretty awful. Not sure how to get back to the course once the video has played.

Hey Paul,

Thanks for getting back to me. Yes that is consistent with previous tester comments. I will need to research work-arounds to this prior to beta launch.

Cheers,
Steve

It should just be a matter of touching the video (to reveal the navigation controls) and then clicking ‘Done’ at the top. I think typical iPhone users would be fine with that. I did a project a few years ago with TONS of videos, randomly presented, and have never received a complaint about usability on mobile.

Hey Paul,

The bigger-bigger question is (no offense Joe, but I couldn’t resist:) is what user experience does your client want. 2017 handles video fine in landscape mode, but on iPhones, video automatically goes full screen. it won’t play inline. Regardless whether its set for portrait or landscape. I learned this with my microlearning project.

Definatley something to consult with, to your client prior to buliding.

Cheers,
Steve

Hmmm. Do you find that most iPhone users understand this and are able top get back on track with an eLearning project (I don’t know because I’m an Android phone user but an iPad user)?

Theoretically yes, and I was kinda banking on that, but I had one report of a tester that couldn’t get back. You may have to set it up so it forces jump backs.

Steve

I think I will do some testing with my wife’s phone and see what the experience is like.

Hey, Paul,

It seems to me that the question isn’t dependent so much on the use of lots of embedded videos, but on whether or not the client needs the theme to be responsive, in other words, whether they need it to run on mobile devices, right? For those clients who have no interest in mobile (yes, they do exist still), I don’t force it on them.

So maybe we need more information?

I think mobile is a requirement but I’m thinking he isn’t going to be too happy about mobile portrait for video. I really didn’t want to use breakpoints a la Cp9 style.
