Where Can I Find a Set of Comprehensive Beginners Tutorials

Greetings,

I’m struggling terribly with Adobe Captivate 2019. It’s my first time using the product and it doesn’t feel intuitive. I waste a lot of time trying to do simple things only to find out that something can’t be done or if it can the work-around is complicated i.e. paragraph and bullet spacing to name one example. Very disappointed with the amount of time I’m spending to create something that is very basic and uninspiring.

I need a comprehensive set of tutorials/manual for beginners. Can someone please point me in the right direction.

Thank you!

Melonya

I’m with Melonya.  I do not have any form of an IT background.  My experience is with MSOffice products.  I was asked to transform some of our PowerPoint presentations into eLearning for my company.  I have been struggling for two days with Captivate and haven’t accomplished anything beyond importing a PP presentation.  When I use text-to-speak, all the charts are played back at the same time.  When I try to set the slides to advance automatically, they go nowhere.  All the pretty “WOW” videos are useless if we don’t have the basic A, B, Cs of how to make it happen.  Where can a brand new user find this kind of information?

Thanks,

Florida, United States.  Any outside training, conferences etc would have to be paid for out of pocket because this software is not part of my regular job description.  The Captivate manual I purchased online was paid for by me.  I hope to get reimbursed but I’m not holding my breath.

Thanks.

P.S.  The book is quite helpful and I’ve finally started on the project.  There are still some bugs like blink boxes not viewing the same between preview and presentation modes.  I hope to get through that shortly.

Thanks again.

My approach as Captivate training may be rather different.  What I consider to be the main topics which could cause you problems are top priority. The link to this ost is not to tutorials, but have written a lot of blog posts, and have some interactive movies about the topics as well. You’ll find a lot of assets for very basic workflows, problem is to find the most useful because it depends a lot on which type of tutorials you want to focus on in the first place.

kristinam26901128 Check out my website at CaptivateTeacher.com. If you reach out to me perhaps I can help you out with some training that doesn’t involve flying out to some destination. I’d be happy to talk about some ideas I have about ways you can skill up in Captivate.

Linkedin Learning has some nice step by step video tutorials, that has always been a nice way for me to learn.  Also, if you do a youtube search if there’s something specific you’re trying to learn, there are often a multitude of results.  I follow Paul Wilson captivateteacher.com and he has some great resources available.

Everyone has different learning preferences. I prefer video as I get to witness each step. Having them described to me doesn’t work, and I like being able to rewind and replay sections of the course.

In preparation for being a teacher of the Adobe Captivate Specialist course, I had to review the course in its entirety (over 6 hours of videos). Sounds crazy but I was able to go through it at my own pace, and while I have been using Captivate since 2005, there were a few things I learned about the software as well.

If you’re in the United States and have the means, you can enroll in this course at the upcoming Adobe eLearning Conference in Washington DC: https://carahevents.carahsoft.com/adobeELconf/.

Thank you, Lita, for promoting my YouTube videos. I think of my YouTube tutorials more like job aids in that they provide a shortcut to a single solution that you may not use every day. I do have a Getting Started playlist that a new Captivate user might find helpful to learn the basics. The playlist isn’t organized into particular order but there are short videos on each of the basic topics you would need to get started.

There are some tutorials under Get Started.  Having trained many people for Captivate just a set of video tutorials  is not the right way to learn for each newbie in Captivate.  A lot depends on your present skills, what you expect to develop in which sector, etc.  Do you have a graphics background, a pedagogical background, ….?

This is not a list as you expect, , but a summary of what I believe to be the three most important stumbling blocks for starters with Captivate?  The now so hyped ‘responsive projects with fluid boxes’ are not included, I would consider them as the 4th skill needed, after you are comfortable with the 3 other skills:

https://elearning.adobe.com/2017/03/three-skills-acquire-captivate-newbies/

What is the most efficient way to acquire those skills? Not one answer really: how do you learn? I never bought one book about Captivate, nor did I  take any training.  That was possible because I have a large pedagogical background, did train about 30 different software applications, was at ease with Adobe applications like PHotoshop, Audition. I learned by trying to solve my problems, and those of other users on the forums.

My answer is a question: what is your background, do you know what is the most efficient way for you tot learn?

You’re welcome. I had to bury my dreams to deliver personalized Captivate training because no one seems to request it lately. Everything needs to be canned which is to me, eternal teacher, very weird since even in university college I always used everything possible to personalize for my students.

Times change, but I am not convinced that this is better.
