Hi

Just started with Adobe Captivate and was wondering if anyone has recommendations for text books on the software

Hello,

If you are looking for something very thorough and like working through tutorials the Mastering Adobe Captivate book by Dr. Pooja Jaisingh and Damien Bruyndonckx is good. I used the 2017 version but there is also a 2019 version.

When I was first learning Captivate 8, I used E-Learning Uncovered by Diane Elkins, Desiree Pinder, and Tim Slade. I find this to be a good resource when I want to go back and refresh my memory on how to do something. It has good step by step instructions and lots of screenshots.

Lynda.com is also an excellent resource if you prefer videos with tutorials.

Have fun!

Lynda.com is replaced by LinkedIn Learning.

Hi Laylipham

Many thanks for your suggestion, our tech library has a copy of this for an older version, I’m sure some of its still relevant.

You’re welcome! If your library has them, the Captivate books by Kevin Siegel are also good but you would need both The Essentials and Beyond the Essentials to cover all the material. I didn’t recommend them earlier because I feel like they are the most expensive option since you have to buy both books.

The Adobe Captivate reference is always a great resource as well. https://helpx.adobe.com/pdf/captivate_reference.pdf

No real answer to your question, because I don’t know what the most efficient way is for you to learn. There are some books around, but I never found any book that will be suitable for any new CP-user. Beware:  I have the same view on the many videos that you can find on channels. IMO both suffer from the same limitations: they do focus only on step-by-step workflows ‘How to….’, but never on the ‘Why would I?’ reason for any workflow. That may look fine to start, but at the end leads to a lot of frustrations.

Based on my long experience with answering since more than a decade daily questions about Captivate on all social media (including official Adobe forums and this portal) I wrote this short overview of the three most important challenges for newbies. If you want a book, a training (don’t look for videos, there are none about those) check if you find enough information about them. I will post the link in another comment, because it could be due to waiting time from moderation (I am not a moderator here, only in the big Adobe forums)
