SmartShapes not displaying in Edge

In Captivate 2017, I have some smartshapes that are being used as buttons. The problem is when I export for HTML5 and run in Microsoft Edge, the button does not show up but it is there because if I move my cursor to that area of the screen it shows up. This ONLY happens in Edge. Everything works fine in IE 11 and Chrome.

Has anyone else experience this? Or, have any idea how to fix it?

Also, the smartshape has an image fill, so I put a stroke on the smartshape and republished. The stroke would display but the graphic didn’t?

Thanks for any help

I’ve the same issue as discribed here and it’s really frustrating. Any ideas?

I’m using:

  • Captivate 2019 (11.5.1.499)
  • Microsoft Edge 44.18362.449.0
  • Microsoft EdgeHTML 18.18362

Strange issue. I am using exactly the same versions of Captivate and Edge, and never did see the problems you describe. Can you try to watch one of my last published interactive movies, to see if you have the same issues? Almost every object looking like a shape is a shape. I rarely use text captions or the old type of buttons (with maybe SVG once in a while as exception):

I could go through your project without any issue.

I’ve attached a simple dummy project with a quizz and a result page. This is an example for shapes with different states (no buttons). The result page is using smart shapes with two states (image fill) for correct/wrong answered questions. Each time you’ll reach the result page, another graphic could be missing, without any logic.

Sorry, but I do not download attachments.

This is new information!!! You never told that the shape button is on a default results slide. Or is it a custom score slide? If it is a default results slide, you probably have edited the slide in a non-acceptable way.  Same as for quiz slides, results slides have a lot of functionality built in the embedded objects.  You cannot just delete any embedded object, if it cannot be done by unchecking an option.

I tried another example: A one page project (no quiz or result page). I added 10 smart shapes – each with the same 2 states – and one button to switch between the two states for all shapes at ones. Clicking the button several times in Edge will sometimes cause the issue, sometimes not.

I would try to clean the Preferences, it is possible that they are slightly corrupted.

Find the subfolder ‘utils’ under the installation folder of Captivate. Close Captivate and run the CleanPreferences… file appropriate for your OS. When you start CP again, a fresh copy of Preferences will be installed. Worth trying…

Thanks Lieve for your quick answers. Cleaning the preferences didn’t help in this case.

Finally I tested different objects in the same senario (switching between two slides with the same objects on each):

  • shapes with color fill
  • shapes with image fill
  • images
  • and all of them used as simple objects or as buttons / with one state or different states.

The problem only occured for shapes with image fill (simple shape or button shape / one state or different states).

My project works fine replacing the following objects:

  • shape buttons with image fill > images used as buttons
  • shapes with image fill and different states > images with different states

There must be a reason why this happens to you, and never happened to me. You need to know  that shape buttons filled with images are still my big favorites. Except in two specific situations I always use them. Those two exceptions are the embedded buttons on quiz/score slides where you cannot use them, and I replace them by Transparent buttons. Did you ever have the issues with transparent buttons which can also be filled by an image? The second situation is for responsive projects, where I prefer SVGs as buttons (better quality on all screens since vector based).

No, transparent buttons filled by an image are no problem.

May I suggest to log a bug? You find the from when clicking on your avatar in the dropdown menu. You can mention that you tried all suggestions in the forum.

I will check out eveery future project myself in Edge to see if I ever get the same problem.

Yes it is strange, never found the root cause, but did a work around: I just put static images underneath the button and changed the button from having an image to a solid color set to zero opacity. It seems to be working in all browsers, still testing though. Not an ideal solution but a solution.

That workaround would not be possible in a responsive project with Fluid Boxes. I always use shape buttons, except for the Quizzing buttons which cannot be shape buttons yet.  I never did see this phenomenon. Since I am now on CP2019, maybe you could check out this interactive video, which I published. All buttons are shape buttons. Do they show up on your system (they do for me):

Yes your buttons worked. Smart shapes with graphics that are displayed on the first slide for the rest of the project work fine in my project. Any smart shapes with graphic fill that are displayed on  later slides do not always show up in Edge. Like I said they are there because if I roll over that area of the screen it displays. This is not only a issue with smart shape buttons but with other smart shapes with states. I have a smartshape with three states and each state has a graphic fill and a variable with text. In Edge sometimes only the text displays. It is really strange and frustrating. I think it probably has to do with an update to Edge because I went back and ran some captivate HTML5 lessons I had on my server that I had not touched since August 2018 and now these same things are happening here too. Very frustrating.

Strange, double checked, works fine on Edge for me with that same version.
