I have been using Captivate 2019 on a Windows 7 i5 desktop. I recently installed Captivate 2019 on a Windows 10 i7 laptop. Installation went smoothly and Captivate starts up fine. However, I cannot create a new project or open an existing project previously created on my desktop. Both desktop and laptop are 64-bit machines with 16Gb RAM running the same version of Captivate 2019.

I have tried running in Windows 7 compatibility mode and running the program as administrator. Still crashes. Please help.

Let us do the usual actions: clear the cache (Preferences) and clean the Preferences by running the ‘CleanPreferencesWin.bat file (Captivate has to be closed) which you find in the subfolder ‘utils’ under the installation folder.

Lieve, I appreciate your time on trying to help me.

This is what I’ve done:

  1. Cleared the cache
  2. Closed Captivate
  3. Run the CleanPreferencesWin batch file
  4. Re-opened Captivate
  5. Changed the “publish at” and “project cache” locations to point to C: drive.
  6. Tried to create a blank project, but it still shuts down at the same point.

Either some app is conflicting with CP or something went wrong while installing. One issue I remember is when you are using a docking station, some of the installed apps with that station conflicted with Captivate. Do you use a docking station?

I do not use a docking station and it is a new laptop but it has MS Office and other apps already installed. Perhaps I should uninstall other apps to reduce the chance of conflict with Captivate?

I don’t think MS Office is conflicting, have it installed on all my systems as well. In the past some fonts conflicted. Did you install a lot of extra fonts?

No extra fonts were installed. The only software installed on the laptop that is not installed on my desktop is the IBM i Access Client to connect to our Power9 systems. I will uninstall it and check if Captivate runs.

Still didn’t work. I will now wipe the laptop, install Windows 10 and latest updates, then install Captivate only. Hope that works.

It worked! Captivate is now running on the Win10 laptop.

Now re-installing the other apps, one by one, to try and pinpoint which one had the conflict with Captivate.

Thanks for your help Lieve.

Thanks Lieve. They are both on version 11.0.1.266. The “publish at” and “project cache” locations are on the local machine.

The Win10 PC can’t even create a new project. I have attached an image of the last thing I see before it shuts down.

I have also one older system still running on Win7, whereas the other two are using Win10. Up till now never had any problem with exchanging files. There may be another reason. Are you really sure to use exactly the same version. Check the number under Help, About Captivate. The most recent version of CP2019 is 11.0.1.266.

Do you run Captivate with ‘Run as Administrator’ option? It looks like it is crashing while loading the default theme. You could restore the packaged themes. It is the duplicate folder ‘Layouts’ which you find in the Public Documents\Adobe\eLearning assets. The original folder is in the Gallery under the installation folde: GalleryLayouts\11_0\En_US\. Copy that folder to replace those in the Public documents.

Yes, I run Captivate as administrator. I am also an administrator on the local machine. I copied the Layouts folder from the installation folder (C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 2019 x264\Gallery) to the public documents folder (C:\Users\Public\Public Documents\Adobe\eLearning Assets), but it still shuts down at the same point.
