Good morning. I recently heard about the software Captivate and this conference.  (1) How can I download the software, a trial/demo version. (2) I am a educator, what sample project do you recommend to get a feel of the software to use with students. I am familiar with Adobe products, however, this is new to me.

I just attended the Adobe World Conference 2020. It proved helpful, except that I noticed that the Captivate software presenters is different than mine, and therefore I could not apply the steps for drag/drop , importing “newest” projects etc. Is there a new version I missed? I have Captivate 2019.

CP2019 had at least 5 releases. That is confusing, understand. You probably still have one of the 11.0 releases, whereas the most recent release starts with 11.5 in the version number. Check the full version number under Help, About Captivate.

If you are still on 11.0, the good news is that you can upgrade for free to 11.5. Use the Help, Updates to  install the upgrade.

However nothing has changed about Drag&Drop at all, there must have been a misunderstanding. There is a new Assets panel in 11.5 which has Quick Start Prjoject. Those are perhaps the ones you refer to as ‘newest projects’.

I have published a lot of blogs about the newest release which has many new features. Here is one about the Quick Start Projects. Under the Featured blogs in this portal you’ll also find my first article about the new features (Reflections on…):

I also had just heard about Captivate, and was wondering pretty much the same things. Thank you!

Here is a second link, explaining some basics about ‘interactivity’. That word is often used, not always has the same meaning for everyone:

Captivate is meant to be used in collaboration with a LMS (Learning Management System). Since you are a teacher, maybe you have already access to such a LMS. Important to  know about it.

Captivate is a multi-featured applications, having some aspects of many other Adobe applications, and on top of that what is necessary to create engaging interactivities.

As professor in a university college I discovered Captivate about 15 years ago and it has become my most favourite app since that date. I often compare it with a thoroughbred: you need some patience to tame it but it is more than worthwhile. This makes answering your question not so easy. What do you want to start with for which topic? Is it for software apps teaching? Is it for a theoretical topic? For soft skills?

I will post two links (one here, one in another comment) to a blog which may be interesting. First is about what I experienced (by helping Captivate users in several social media) to be the most important stumbling blocks for newbies:

This is for non-responsive projects. If you want to have responsive projects (which I don’t recommend to start with before acquiring basic skills), you can add the Fluid Boxes workflow as an extra stumbling block.

Thank you for responding and I will definitely look at the links you provided. I am interested in becoming a instructional technology designer in the future.
