I’m creating a software simulation that walks someone through logging into their router and changing some settings. The various web pages are different sizes and require scrolling down to find some options.
My problem is that every slide must be identical in size. This seems an arbitrary and capricious restriction.
I can make a ‘page up/page down button’ like thing but I really need the end user to have scroll functionality.
I have ‘panoramic’ screenshots where I have the entire page, but to use it I have to set the project to a much larger and more peculiar size. This also puts much unneeded whitespace on most pages and generally makes it look like garbage.
The research I’ve done prior to posting here tells me that it is not possible. That is insane and is the kind of core feature that is going to make me use something else to build this training. That is also insane and a lot of work. I really want to find a solution here.
I’ve done something like this before. It’s true that you cannot have one slide that is larger than others, but you can have screen captures larger than the slide. Then, you can use the native motion path animations of Captivate to “scroll” the screen capture through the viewing screen.
This was perfectly possible in the good old days of SWF output. I used a widget from InfoSemantics to create the possibility for the learner to have scrolling feature. Just wanted to tell this because of your ‘…. not possible….’. I am sure it is possible also for HTML5 output, if you have JS programming skills. It is correct that it is not included with the software simulation feature packaged with Captivate. Scrolling, even in Training/assessment simulations, are never controlled by the learner. You are correct…
Belated answer for multiple reasons. Why is Captivate to be called ‘garbage’ because of this? Please, find another tool which offers you all the features for software training that you want and tell it here. Or launch a feature request. Take a look at my video tutorial on Software Simulations https://youtu.be/lw2UnrmwHPs
Are you building these software simulations from scratch or are you using the Captivate’s Software Simulation recording capabilities. If so, Captivate has the ability to capture a scrolling window quite effectively. Don’t worry that these appear to be SWF. When you publish them as HTML5 they will be converted to short movies. If you wish to not use the FMR slides in your software simulation you can instruct learners to click on the blank area to have them initiate a page down or page up action. Again this can easily be captured in the Software Simulation recording capability of Captivate.
