captivate, audio issues., bugs, errors, problems, eLearning, toggle, buttons
I have been working on an eLearning project for a client. We created some content and a custom navigation to toggle the audio. The buttons work, I can click the sound off and on…. but on certain. slides it just TURNS ON out of nowhere! We wrote a different script using the captivate sound toggle. and still at certain slides the audio turns on.
We then deleted ALL of our custom action script and I created a simple shape and clicked “use as button” I added STOP TRIGGERED AUDI). and still at random parts of our project the AUDIO turns on all by itself.
I have been back and forth with Support on this, first they tell me its a bug, then its been fixed (clearly NOT Fixed) then they say its our code, even though I show them the file with NONE of OUR code.
I’m just surprised with so many eLearning projects being created…. and I would assume a majority are using audio, have not run into this major issue of not being able to control the audio and turn it off or on without issues.
Anyone else having these issues??
P.S. Whatever happened with Project CHARM??
Cheers,

Hello,
You are supposed to post a new post for your question. But in Captivate you just go to File>Record a New> then you can choose software simulation (the old method of screen recording, where it just takes screenshots as the screen changes and simulates the mouse movements. It can also add click buttons, captions, and of course records your audio.) or select Video Demo.. to record everything in real time exported as a video, as compared to screen shots with an animated mouse).
Hope this helps! When it comes to editing the video, I suggest doing all of that in Adobe Premiere. In my experience it never works so well in Captivate, aside from clipping the beginning and end of the clip.

Stop Triggered Audio is only functional for audio clips which have been started with the action ‘Play Audio’. It cannot stop background audio, slide audio nor object audio.
I still wonder why you talk about ‘actionscript’ which is obsolete now since output to SWF makes no sense.
why is it that instead of trying to HELP people, you always seem angry, bitter, and trying to make people feel stupid? Does it make you feel good?
I mentioned Actionscript above (again) because I QUOTED what I said in my original post. Usually when things are in Quotes, it means literally , exactly what was written or said. Is that really a big issue for you? Any idea where the word “Actions” even came from? Captivate is basically Flash for Dummies. In Flash (now Animate) you animate on the timeline, you create buttons from scratch, use a library, and script with Actions, called Actionscript. I have worked in Flash for many many years and create banners, animation, and interactive games and multimedia(now eLearning) projects from scratch using Actionscript. So now that I use the simple dummied down Actions and Advanced Actions which is a script…. I called it Actionscript. Is that okay? Did you know that I meant the scripting language used in Captivate which is actually a lot of Actionscript. The skins, the SWF export, its all action script. Only difference is since Captivate is dummied down, you can’t really script your own actions, but you can use drag and drop to create the script. Really not a big difference to make a big deal about, especially when someone is looking for help… not an argument. But you can be the Winner okay! *****
And I guess I can tell the Adobe team that this bug CAP-4205433 is all fixed. Lieve said so.
And I did mention what I used “We did use custom buttons at first, with Advanced Actions and still had the issue.” Maybe you can try helping more in the Forums, and criticizing and nitpicking, LESS. Just something people might appreciate. Or why even try to help?
Thanks,

Audio and the timeline need a deep understanding. I rarely have issues with audio. You don’t tell if you used JS or advanced actions (ActionScript is dead, was for SWF output), nor did you tell which type(s) of audio you are using: slide audio, object audio, audio started with ‘Play audio’ or background audio?
actually if you read my post I clearly stated
“We then deleted ALL of our custom action script and I created a simple shape and clicked “use as button” I added STOP ALL TRIGGERED AUDIO). and still at random parts of our project the AUDIO turns on all by itself.”
not sure how much more clear to be. Its Captivates ACTION, on a simple Shape, checked to be a button…. and as I slide through certain screens, the audio turns back on!
We did use custom buttons at first, with Advanced Actions and still had the issue. Then Adobe support re-programmed the buttons and removed all slides but 5, and then it worked. But when I take their exact same script, and/or buttons with their exact Action… still at certain screens the audio turns back on.
I find it surprising that you have no audio issues… since this is a reported Bug!
The bug number is – CAP-4202879 . TCS support did not seem to want to believe this and told me to download the new trial version since he said it was fixed. But finally after a few more discussions and showing him our file with ALL buttons removed except a simple captivate button to “Stop all triggered. audio” (which would include timeline, buttons, and/or background audio since MUTE is MUTE, NO audio) and their simple Captivate button still did NOT keep the audio MUTE for the duration of the project. then he finally got back to me again and wrote:
“We have logged bug# CAP-4205433 for the same, which would be resolved in upcoming updates.”
So now their are TWO bug reports of the sound issues. Bug so glad you rarely have issues with audio.
I have issues with numerous things in Captivate… like simple things like Command+S to save many times gives me the warning sound and doesn’t work, or Command +/- to zoom in and out hardly ever works. And having to add an effect one at a time, or when I click in one spot it jumps the screen and/or timeline to another location. There are Numerous issues with Captivate, and I would say almost every project I have worked on had some sort of issue. Another project had all our fonts aligned, but when we preview the project none of the text is aligned.
P.S. And what ever happened with Project Charm? I was hoping they would rebuild Captivate from the ground up so that it works as good as the other Professional Adobe applications like Photoshop, After Effects, Illustrator! But now its been 6 months and I am still waiting to check out the beta! Where is it?
