Hi, I am new to the world of ID, I have a background in digital media production. Which involves video editing, graphics animation, and audio recording for TV and film.  I am planning on working remotely full time and I was told that I could put my skills and knowledge in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, After Effects, and Premire into ID. So I thought why not give it a try, and so I got myself Captivate to start my journey.  Is there any important information I should know before getting started with the job hunt please let me know?

Currently, I am learning the software and I have been using this community to help me when I run into a roadblock. SO far the help and resources have been a blessing.

I am taking any and all tips and advice, also I would like to know what kind of complex creatives tips you may have I want my lessons to look Dope.

Hi, good luck on what I am sure will be a very exciting and fun journey. I have been in training for some time and I totally agree with Lieve, watch some online courses, you will find some bad, and some fantastic courses, but they will all give you an idea of how to do things from a learners perspective. Then practice with the software. I am constantly learning new tricks and ideas the more I use the software and I am also constantly updating what I have done before. Don’t be afraid to experiment and if it doesn’t work then you know not to do it again and if it does then you can move forward with that idea.

I’m also new to the world of ID and am studying at uni right now. I’m excited to dive into Adobe Captivate to create content that I can hopefully use with my students. Best of luck to you!

Hi, welcome to ID world. I think there’s no other job title that contains so many specifications so it could be a long way. By the way, you have done most of it. Your skills in Adobe software are a great advantage. And I’m sure you can produce so many creative course materials with your background knowledge.
Seems like Paul, and Lieve gave you great pieces of information about being an ID. Maybe I can add something.
If you want to be an ID you’ll need to know about SCORM, AICC even TinCan, or xAPI standards. And I’m sure you’ve heard about LMS and LRS.
It’s just not preparing some course material and giving them to owners. You’ll need to know about the tracking specifications. It’s not important whether you’re an LMS administrator or not you need to know your course package capabilities about the tracking data. You’re lucky that so much information about this is on the internet.

Hi, welcome to the Captivate world,  sorry for my english, I´ll do my best.

Some basic things to know if you come from Photoshop, Illustrator and video software is that Captivate workflow is different in many ways to other programs like After Effects and Animate, it´s a combination of slides, timelines and actions.

You´ll see all your items at once set in your timeline when it´s paused, no matter the time where you are positioned, maybe this creates some confussion at the beginning, edition software like Premiere you only sees the items set on the time your playback head are.

Keep your slides simpliest as you can, don´t overload of images or text.

Keep your actions and programation as clean as you can sometimes the solution is more easy than you think.

Follow Paul Wilson, he has a huge knoledge and expertise on Captivate, take a look at his video tutorials.

Hope it helps, have a nice day.

Thank you so much for reaching out, I really appreciate it. ANd thank you for letting me know about this information. I took some time to learn the software and it’s a bit different from the other production software I use Pr/AE/Ps and Ai. But I am up for the challenge and I am absolutely implementing my skills in the other software into Cp.

Knowing the tools of the industry is practical but at some point, you might need to address the “why” we do certain things in learning design.

Unlike many who pursued an instructional design career through higher education, I came to it by accident. I started off as a subject matter expert who was hired as an instructional designer over 17 years ago. I was enrolled in a series of courses from Langevin Learning, the world’s largest train-the-trainer company. I can’t recommend them enough. They offer a combination of live online workshops and in-person workshops that can lead to various certifications based on your needs.

When I got started I completed…

  • Instructional Techniques for New Instructors
  • Instructional Design for New Designers, and
  • Advanced Instrucitonal Techniques

Later I completed…

  • 25 Creative Ways to Add Excitement to Your Training
  • Training Needs Analysis

This amount of training makes me a “Technical Trainer” but more importantly, I have the foundation in andragogy that makes me ready to fulfill the needs for corporate learning development.

Here’s a link to their website: https://langevin.com/

Hi Paul, thank you so much for reaching out, and I have to say your videos are the ones that got me here and made the decision to shift my career into ID. I have been watching a lot of your youtube posts, they have been super helpful through this journey.  Last night I completed my first project. I made a simple lesson on the 5 instructional design principles. I made a server account with Amazon S3, and currently watching a video of you explaining how I can upload my eLearning program to my Adobe Portfolio site.

I have been doing a lot of reading and research to understand what it means to be an ID and work in the field. I am starting to understand the main components beyond the technical application., such as understanding ADDIE, SAM, TNA, and how all these components affect a learning program. This is my first year in the world of ID and hopes that my technical skill and design skills will help me succeed in this career.

Do you have any pedagogical background?  It is great to have access to creative tools, I also love to use my skills with Photoshop, Audition, Illustrator and Animate in roundtripping with Captivate. At the end it is however about learning, and that part requires different skills. Did you ever take an online course? That is the first recommendation I would give: try to get some feeling from the learner’s side.

Hi Lieve thank you so much for reaching out, as for my background, I currently work in film and media, but after graduating from college (Bachelor’s in Digital Media Production) I worked as a substitute teacher and special education teacher, while I was working on finding a stable industry job as an editor.

I have taken an online course before, and while I learning more about ID, I am taking a look to see how each project should flow and how the information should line up.  It helps to understand and work on Action Mapping for projects to do well and I look forward to learning more as I go.

I have a question is getting a corporate job as ID difficult?  I’m interested i finding a remote job as a ID.

That is good news, because while working on consultancy jobs with ID’s I often see a total lack about pedagogy, only concern seems to be getting out projects quickly. This is probably also linked to the fact that the follow up phase, where the results based on eLearning course should be analyzed and the courses are edited based on that analysis, almost never happens. In a normal life learning environment, even if it includes eLearning assets,  that happens spontaneously but rarely in a pure eLearning environment: ID delivers course and it is over. My lifelong teacher heart often breaks when I see the low quality of eLearning courses, and the hype about YT passive videos being the best way for real learning. Since you are from a digital media background, which can be a big advantage, beware of this warning: design is only one aspect of your courses, not always the most important. Audio is indispensable as well but the right interactivities, suited to your learners, and the possibility for peer learning will be more important.
