  • I need to convert some old Adobe Captivate SWF files to HTML5 but my problem is all I have is the published Adobe Captivate files that are on the server.  I do not have the original Adobe Captivate file.  I do have access to the published file that was exported.  Is there a way to use those file for a conversion?

I recently completed a project for a client who only had the SWF files for learning modules built with Flash (8 years ago). Although I was able to extract a few assets from the SFW file (using Adobe Animate), but I had to rebuild all of the modules in order to recreate all of the games, interactions, and quizzes. It ended up being a good opportunity for my client to update/modify some of the content.

Indeed, I didn’t even mention Animate, because most Cp developers who need to do conversions will have no experience with Animate (new name for Flash Builder).

I find it also a waste of time to upgrade from a very old version even if you have the cptx-file. As mentioned in my blog (see first comment) an ignored feature which may help at recovering assets is the possibility to open the Library of that older project in a new project as External Library. I have been able to do this for files created with CP5 about 10 years ago, and certainly with newer projects. Recreating using those assets, taking advantage of newer added features, may prove a time saver compared to trying to update (multiple times) to a recent version with all the possible issues and incompatibilities.

Lieve’s suggestion would work, but have you considered hiring a contractor to recreate the project for you?

My only solution which you can also find in a blog I posted months ago is to capture the SWF while it is playing with the Video Demo in Captivate. You can combine the output (mp4) with content slides in a cptx project, and/or you can convert the video to an Interactive Video.

Have a look at:

The Survey in this blog ends with recommendations. Normally I should have co-presented about this topic in the June conference. But Adobe changed my topic and it was done by Dr. Allen Partridge. You can find the recordings of all sessions of the conference under the button ElWorld in this portal.
