I’m currently battling a particular problem involving copyright and other intellectual property matters in eLearning. Recently, I accidentally included a copyrighted image in one of my modules, which raised questions about the potential for legal trouble. How can copyright issues be handled successfully when using outside resources in eLearning content? I’m looking for workable solutions and industry-recognized best practices to guarantee adherence and guard against infringement. What tips or resources have you found helpful for handling copyright and intellectual property in eLearning?
Hello! One practical solution to address copyright issues is to create original content or work with content creators who offer licenses specifically for eLearning purposes. By collaborating with subject matter experts and graphic designers, you can develop customized visuals and media that are unique to your eLearning modules, ensuring compliance with copyright regulations.
Many years ago, I was developing training for my organization regarding accessibility. A piece of equipment our organization used was a unique gadget for assisting passengers with disabilities in getting on smaller regional aircraft that are too small for the jetways (I worked at an airport). I found a great video online that explained how to use it. I could have quietly inserted this video into the course, but I decided it was more prudent to ask the vendor for permission to operate it. They were so excited that someone would feature their product prominently in a training course that they permitted me to include the video and even sent me a higher-quality version than I could find on the internet. In this case, asking permission was a better approach than asking forgiveness.
