Breakpoint sizing issue – Smart Shape Buttons

Captivate 2019 11.01.266 Working in Breakpoint mode. Using smart shapes as buttons. Multiple buttons on each slide I am able to get the images and buttons resized and located correctly in the breakpoint view and in the preview and preview on devices prior to publication. When published, the buttons are not sizing or stay associated with the locations on the breakpoints as designed, causing overlaps, text to get cut off, and incorrect placements. When I return to the Captivate file, the resizing has defaulted […]

Web Object creation issue

Running 2019 11.01.266. We have a Moodle 3.2 cloud based LMS that has a media repository. Weird problem when i create a web object in the Captivate project. I’m creating a web object to call in the video and it works, but the video immediately starts playing, the video controls go away, and it won’t stop running until I exit Captivate altogether. (I even deleted the object, but the audio kept playing after deletion). Published it out and loaded it […]

Video Demo Audio Distorting

I’m recording screen captures using system audio, and I am getting distorted sound – any ideas?

Thoughts on Accessibility Naming and Descriptions – Best Practices

Please note: not following these doesn’t result in failing a 508/accessibility test, it just makes the learning experience less than optimum for those using screen readers Filling out the “Accessibility Name” Box: the screen reader already identifies what type of object it is automatically – so titling an image as “image: XXX” results in screen reader repetition (“Image. Image XXX.”). Unless you’re using this to call out a slide title or identify a specific, unique characteristic of the object essential […]

Common Accessibility Issues

Just wanted to put out some recurrent issues we’ve been running into and how we address them: Problem: Inaccessible screens in projects – When trying to use Inspect or other accessibility tools to check readability of objects inside a published Captivate project, the tool cannot get beyond reading the information associated with the slide level.  Current solution: This seems to be associated with publishing as a swf – either in combination (swf/html5) or swf only. We’re now only publishing as […]

Making Text Read in a Tab Order

Text captions don’t show up in your tab order – they’re not interactive and the screen readers don’t care how you want them read. On the JAWS and NVDA screen readers the reading order is a bit weird –  it reads from left to right and slightly up – meaning if you have two columns of text in one text caption like this: the reader will read “One Four Two Five Three Six” Two separate text captions with the same […]

Using Smart Shapes in an Accessibility Enabled Project

First – Smart shapes cannot be used as buttons in a project that must meet accessibility standards. Smart shape buttons are not accessible using the tab/enter combination. While you may or may not be able to tab to the shape, selecting “enter” or the space bar will not trigger the button action.   Second – Smart shapes with text are not automatically read like a text caption. You must enter the text in the accessibility pop-up in order for the […]

Accessibility and the Multiple Choice Quiz Slides

I’ve answered several questions regarding accessibility and the pre-built Captivate quiz slides over the past few months and decided to put the information here for easy access to anyone who needs it. To start with: Tab/Enter is not the default method of navigation for a multiple choice quiz slide. The following will work on Firefox and IE 11 and worked in Chrome when I was building to it last year. 1. None of the slide reads without tabbing in – […]

Accessibility – Lessons Learned

OK, folks, here goes nothing. Let me start this by providing my bit about my background. I’ve been designing, developing and certifying 508 complaint web based trainings for the government departments for the past several years in multiple positions with multiple departments and agencies. This post will not give you a checklist that ensures your project will pass testing – it’s simply an attempt to share what I have learned. Lesson #1: 508 compliant and 508 certified are not equal […]
