What are eLearning Devs and IDs reading?

Greetings all. I am always looking for resources and things to learn from.  I have read some articles recommending books and unfortunately some that seem really interesting I haven’t been able to find, but I will continue to look. Thought I would pose the question here. What are some good resources that you recommend? They don’t have to specifically be direct to eLearning or Instructional Design, but they obviously can. But if there is something that relates and you feel […]

Plan on also heading to a Barnes and Nobles this weekend and see what’s […]

Multiple Failure messages for Drag&Drop KC slide

Intro This article is written as an answer to a question on the forums: Drag&Drop with Advanced Action For quiz slides it is possible to show different Failure messages based on the attempt number. That functionality is not available for Drag&Drop slides. As you can read in the thread, another user posted a solution using the Object actions which are executed after each drag action.  I posted some comments about the limitations of that solution. In this article the described solution is […]

Top 10 Benefits of Adopting Blended Training Approach

Last few years have seen a steady increase in demand for conversion of Instructor Led Training (ILT) to fully online or a blended training. In this blog, I outline what exactly is blended training approach and what are the benefits it offers to the learners and organisations. What is the blended training approach? As you can determine from the name, the blended training is the “middle of the road” approach between the fully facilitated Instructor Led Training (ILT) and self-paced, learner driven […]

Generate Random Quotes and Messages

I hope this blog is useful to anyone who wants to incorporate a random motivational quote or ‘tip of the day’ message into their projects.  I attached a sample .cptx file as well.   randomQuotes Step 1: Write the Quotations in an Array The hardest part about creating any random quote generator is finding, copying and pasting the actual quotes.  Luckily there are lots of websites such as textfiles.com that could help you out – that’s where I got this file.  Your array must […]

Adobe Captivate – Advanced Answer Option Using Fluid Boxes

As some of you may know, The advanced answer option hasn’t proven to be all that compatible with the new fluid box responsive design features in Adobe Captivate 2017. Hopefully, this is something that Adobe will rectify in the not too distant future. In the meantime, please check out my workaround that uses a single shape that uses multi-state objects.

How to Use Local Storage

Introduction If you are not hosting your project on an LMS and you want a simple way to save and retrieve user data (such as high scores and names) than local storage is a good way to go. Adobe’s current documentation on Local Storage https://helpx.adobe.com/captivate/using/common-js-interface.html only focuses on storing ‘strings’ such as user names, so this tutorial also shows how to work with integers (numbers) as well. I have included a .cptx file and will be referring to it throughout this tutorial. localStorage A few […]

Captivate 2017 – JavaScript to delay next action

5 Useful JavaScripts I Commonly Use

This is for anyone interested in learning more about how to use JavaScript with Captivate.  Here’s a list of 5 simple yet commonly used JavaScripts I use. 1.  Arrays Arrays are awesome and this quick reference only covers a fraction of their power. Let’s say you have a several comments that you want to use throughout your project at various times. Rather than writing them up each time, or having the comments stored as different variables, I use an single […]

PowerPoint, Meters, and States – Oh My!

PowerPoint sometimes gets a bad rap but I truly believe in the ‘power’ that PowerPoint has available. In this post, I wanted to share with you one of the ways I use PowerPoint to supplement what I want to accomplish in Adobe Captivate. Meters I love using meters in my activities. Whether that is a progress meter or some sort of indication of success, meters can be a great way to inform the learner of how they are doing. There […]

Super-Easy Dynamic Successive ‘Quiz Failure Attempts’

Preamble This blog is in response to a few comments and questions I’ve seen about successive failure attempts such as “if a learner gets a question wrong on the third time I want the program to…”.  Now Captivate already has a built in quiz function that allows you to show up to three successive ‘failure messages’.  This is great if all you need it to show a message, but what if you want something more.  For example, maybe on the second […]

Cost of Training Vs. Cost of Not Training

Human resources are the drivers of organization’s business endeavors. They cause business to win new opportunities and help grow further. Eventually, they also impact negatively on business results. Smart businesses recognize this critical constituent and act to turn it in their favor. So, the important question is ‘What is that they do to achieve it?’ The answer is: ‘Workforce training is the only idea which helps them’. “Training is the most effective and efficient instrument to make an impactful change […]

Top 4 Benefits of Elearning Over Instructor-Led Training

Ever since the emergence of eLearning, there has always been a debate on the role of competent trainers in the learning and development arena. Many organizations primarily relied on these trainers and they struggled to retain them. Learners had to adapt every trainer and their training style. Due to the modern learning needs and technologies, the training is no more confined to the classroom. As a result, the role of a trainer and/or instructor-led training (ILT) went down the hill […]
