What are eLearning Devs and IDs reading?

Greetings all. I am always looking for resources and things to learn from.  I have read some articles recommending books and unfortunately some that seem really interesting I haven’t been able to find, but I will continue to look. Thought I would pose the question here. What are some good resources that you recommend? They don’t have to specifically be direct to eLearning or Instructional Design, but they obviously can. But if there is something that relates and you feel […]

JavaScript Book Recommendation

Hi, Can someone recommend JavaScript, HTML and CSS books for beginners that would be a best fit for Adobe Captivate? I keep researching but do not find anything in particular. However, if anyone can recommend any books that were of great help to you and Captivate, let me know! Currently, I have a few in my Amazon cart but just not sure which would be good. Plan on also heading to a Barnes and Nobles this weekend and see what’s […]

Multiple Failure messages for Drag&Drop KC slide

Intro This article is written as an answer to a question on the forums: Drag&Drop with Advanced Action For quiz slides it is possible to show different Failure messages based on the attempt number. That functionality is not available for Drag&Drop slides. As you can read in the thread, another user posted a solution using the Object actions which are executed after each drag action.  I posted some comments about the limitations of that solution. In this article the described solution is […]

Publishing Your Project on Amazon S3

As a freelance eLearning designer developer, I often have to share my eLearning prototypes with clients for review. I have had several solutions to this over the years but recently had some extra difficulties with my previous solutions. After some research, I found this solution from the folks at Articulate. I suggest you watch this video in addition to what I’m offering here. The first thing you’ll need is an Amazon Web Services account. https://aws.amazon.com You’ll also need to download […]

Caveat Auditor: The Role Of Critical Thinking In Modern Business Training

Critical thinking is a skill that, when absent, contributes to the rise of recent phenomena like runaway fake news stories or hacking of government and corporate computers, and costs companies dearly in law suits, fines, penalties, and failed projects. The skill of critical thinking in modern business is often described as desirable when asking employers what it is that they are looking for in new hires (Hart Research Associates, 2013). Employers lament the inability of new employees to think critically […]

Pop up Mini Knowledge Checks

In this video, I will show you how to create a pop-up mini survey, multiple choice single answer, multiple choice multi-answer, true-false type question. This can be a great way to have mini knowledge checks without interrupting the flow of training.

Ideas l Tips l Examples

If you have struggled to find some Adobe Captivate examples for sources of inspiration, then feel free to check out my online portfolio.  It only makes sense that potential employers, hiring managers, fellow e.Learning professionals, coworkers, etc. want to see what you’re made of, then having some work examples seems like the obvious answer. I have been using Adobe Captivate since it’s initial launch back in 2004.  I know that dates me, but it should provide a bit of context […]

Use Media Encoder for Video in eLearning

In this video, I will show you what you need to know about encoding your video for use in your Adobe Captivate eLearning.

Alternative Exam Captivate 9

I was recently tasked with creating alternative questions for an exam.  Only after the learner fails the first exam are they suppose to be given the alternative questions as a retake exam. I tried using a question pool, to branch off to a second question pool if they fail, but that didn’t work. Suggestions?

How and Why Pause Captivate’s Timeline?

Intro This is the fourth post in a sequence of 5. The first post introduced features of all timelines, the second is focused on the specific aspects of the Video Demo Timeline, the third on the aspects of the normal/responsive projects (cptx) both for master slides and normal slides. To understand this article – perhaps the most important – I recommend to  read at least the first and the third article as a preparation.  Both explain features of the Timeline in […]

How to Trigger Captivate Advanced Actions with Javascript

A lot of the work I do involves access to course variables, objects, and functions from outside via JavaScript. Some tools make it easier than others. One of the most common things I need to do is trigger a chain of actions to run when a variable is changed. For instance, I may want to lock all the navigation until the server reports that user may proceed. (Maybe they need to complete a task on the site before continuing.) In Adobe Captivate, […]

Importing Cinema 4D output into Captivate 9

I want to use a very basic animation (a figure walking up to a desk) into Captivate 9.  Our Visual Production shop is using Cinema 4D to create these objects, but I need to know the specifics on what output I’ll need to bring what they create into Captivate.  Any help on what I need to tell them…or anything in particular I need to consider….would be greatly appreciated. v/r Jay

Where should slide prompts be placed?

hello all,  I was having a discussion with some coworkers regarding best practices for elearning. Where should prompts such as click on this hyperlink be placed. Should they all be placed at the same x coordinate on every slide. Or should be placed next to the item you are asking to the click? What is the standard best practice?

Accessibility and the Multiple Choice Quiz Slides

I’ve answered several questions regarding accessibility and the pre-built Captivate quiz slides over the past few months and decided to put the information here for easy access to anyone who needs it. To start with: Tab/Enter is not the default method of navigation for a multiple choice quiz slide. The following will work on Firefox and IE 11 and worked in Chrome when I was building to it last year. 1. None of the slide reads without tabbing in – […]
